Epi 194 :: Laura Sook Duncombe :: Author :: A Pirate’s Life for She

Shiver me timbers! This week’s epi features lawyer turned author and pirate, Laura Sook Duncombe, whose work uncovers the bounty of female pirates history has long ignored. From Grace O’Malley, who terrorized shipping operations around the British Isles during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, to the earliest known female pirate, Queen Artemisia I of Halicarnassus, who plundered Greek and Persian ships around 500 BCE. Laura helps us scallywags find our sea legs as we have much to learn from these powerful women who came from all walks of life but had one thing in common: a desire for freedom.

It will be mutinous, me hearties, if you miss this audacious epi with Laura Sook Duncombe, author of A Pirate’s Life for She. She takes us below deck to shine the light  on some of the world’s female buccaneers, who sailed alongside—and sometimes in command of—their male counterparts. So batten down the hatches, muster your best “aaarrrgghhh” and settle in with a mug of Gina’s “Rum Rumaway” as you give this epi a listen. Or else we might make you walk the plank!

Epi 193 :: Dr. Hoby Wedler :: Ph.D. Chemist and Entrepreneur :: Sensory Expert

Jump right into this buzzworthy epi, to learn some of Keith’s secrets on how to achieve that beautiful garden you’ve been dreaming while letting the bees do most of the work. Epi 191 :: Xina Eiland :: Co-Founder :: UNMUTE

After spending time with—and being mentored by—some of the “giants” from the Civil Rights Movement, Xina has dedicated her life’s work to fighting for racial equality. In 2018, she established UNMUTE, an initiative that arms the workforce with tools to foster those tough-to-have, yet desperately needed, conversations around systemic racism. So on this epi, we break form and cut to the chase, in order to have just that kind of conversation. We get authentic, gritty and real, as Xina schools us on how important it is to learn our full history (not just part) so we can play our role in positively changing the future.

With a community made up of more than 500 people in over 13 countries, and partnered with innovators like Google, AOL and Etsy, Xina has pushed the doors wide open to having some hard conversations about racism. As she puts it, “It’s not teaching your children to be shameful or hate themselves about their history...it’s really to help people understand race relations in this country and why we are where we are today.” So that’s just what we do—we bravely unmute, share and learn, so we can be better and do better.

Epi 190 :: Julie Socher :: Boudoir Photographer

We are baring it all on this epi with Julie Socher, a crazy talented boudoir photographer on a mission to empower her subjects in order to bring out their inner beauty and confidence. Her body of work rings true to the simple message that drives her artistic approach, “You are enough,” and once you’re exposed to her work, we are sure you will agree.

It is said that a portrait is not made in the camera, but on either side of it, and Julie’s approach to boudoir photography is a true testament to that sentiment. Each of her powerful images are a story of strength and confidence with just a bit of mystery and a dash of vulnerability. Steve takes us on a trip through history by pouring the old ways of the New World into our glasses. As the Dir of Historic Trades at good ole’ GW’s Mount Vernon Estate, Steve oversees the production of spirits at George Washington's Distillery, where 18th-century methods and recipes are used to create rye whiskey, as well as peach and apple brandy. This is a history lesson you’re gonna love.

On this epi, Steve shares how he and his team of historical interpreters distill spirits the old-fashion way, using heat from open fires and fermenting the mash in wooden barrels. Obviously, it’s hard work staying true to the traditions, but their award-winning whiskey is proof that it’s all worth it.

EPI 166 :: John Ravis :: Co-Founder & VP of Sales ::  Maximo Mezcal

It’s funny how—and when—inspiration strikes. When the acquisition deal that John and his partner had spent months working on turned sour, the dream to create their own mezcal brand was born. With many trips to Mexico, a lot of research, a few family connections and a bit of luck, they were well on their way to creating their delightfully approachable Maximo Mezcal.

Easy, bright and mixes well with others describes John and his mezcal. He introduces us to his Maximo Joven Mezcal, drops some agave knowledge and reminds us when life throws you a curve ball, smack that sucker right out of the park.

epi 165 :: Karen Sugar :: Founder & Director :: Women’s Global Empowerment Fund

As her name may lead you to believe, yes, Karen is sweet—but don’t let that fool you—she’s definitely one badass chick. The mission of her Women’s Global Empowerment Fund is extraordinary: to support women through economic, social and political programs, creating opportunities while addressing inequality, all the while strengthening families and the communities they call home.

Karen’s life-long commitment to human rights and social justice led her to start the Women’s Global Empowerment Fund in 2007. Since then, she has helped thousands of women in northern Uganda to gain access to microcredit loans, business and leadership development training, education and literacy programs, and even health initiatives. Her positive impact on so many is simply unimaginable. Cheers to that!

epi 164 :: Audrey Davis :: Director :: Alexandria Black History Museum

You need no magic elixir, newfangled app or to spend hours mastering sudoku in order to raise your IQ level. You simply need to spend some time with Audrey P. Davis to get your cerebrum fit as fiddle. Believe us when we say, she has forgotten more than the rest of us will ever know when it comes to American history. And fortunately for us, she puts that knowledge to work at the Alexandria Black History Museum and share a bit of it on this epi.

Audrey started curating and designing museum galleries before most of us could even multiply and divide. When just knee-high to a grasshopper, she was creating exhibits in her childhood bedroom and inviting her parents to the opening of her “gallery.” She’d charge them entry fee, of course (told you she was smart). Obviously, Audrey was destined for her current role as the Director of the Alexandria Black History Museum and for a life well-spent ensuring the rest of us don’t forget the past.

EPI 163 :: Michael P. Foley :: Author :: Drinking With The Saints, Drinking With Saint Nick & Drinking With Your Patron Saints

Growing up in the Catholic household of Irish-German / French-Canadian parents, was a great foundation for Michael’s future as author of his amazing books that are equal parts entertaining, informative and great cocktail recipes.

At the crossroads of Catholicism and craft cocktails, you find this week’s Designated Drinker, Michael P. Foley—a theologian, Professor in the Great Texts Program at Baylor University and author of Drinking with the Saints, Drinking with Saint Nick, and Drinking with Your Patron Saints.

EPI 162 :: Absinthia  :: Founder :: Absinthia’s Bottled Spirits

With the last name of Vermut—which means wormwood in German—Absinthia may literally have absinthe running through her veins. Either way, she’s a perfect Designated Drinker, as she has made it her business to make things that help others make better cocktails. On this epi, she shares her journey to becoming Absinthia, as we enjoy her Absinthia™ Organic Absinthe Blanche Superieure and Nickel Dime Fairy Dust Cocktail Syrup. Not a tough day at the office, huh?

Absinthia’s journey that took her from bootlegger to award-winning spirit maker started in 1997. This is also when she earned the name Absinthia, which she eventually made her legal name. Her Absinthia™ Organic Absinthe Blanche Superieure—which has won multiple awards—is uniquely elegant, bright and refreshing. So, we can’t wait to try her Absithe Verte which be released in the near future, so we’ll let you know as soon as it does.

EPI 161 :: Bill Thomas :: Whiskey Curator ::  Jack Rose Dining Saloon

The time has come to “Open That Bottle” as only a Designated Drinker can. So, who better to do that with than spirit hunter and whiskey aficionado, Bill Thomas? He shares his thoughts on choosing spirits that are worth your investment and the value of sharing it with others. We all know, a great bottle only gets better when you can share the experience.

Apparently, great minds think alike, because on this epi, Bill Thomas and Gina both open their favorite bottles of Willett. Louise on the other hand, reaches for a bottle of a small batch Mezcal she brought back from one of her many trips to Mexico. All 3 do so in honor of “Open That Bottle” while they chat about the current state of the bar and restaurant industry and what plans they have for the future to make it a success.

epi 160 :: Mary Kelly :: Portfolio Brand Ambassador :: Samson & Surrey

Rockstar from behind the bar Mary Kelly introduces us to Widow Jane You’ll Never Walk Alone—a limited edition “distiller’s choice” bottling of its signature 10-year bourbon, with 100% of the profits donated to the USBG National Charity Foundation & C.O.R.E. (Children of Restaurant Employees). Now that’s a great way to observe World Bartender Day!

Due to current safety measures, restaurants must restrict the number of patrons, therefore, shifts are limited and tips are fewer. So, Mary shares some ideas on how we can help the employees of the f&b industy, which can be as simple as ordering a bit of Widow Jane You’ll Never Walk Alone the next time you’re at your favorite watering hole. All the proceeds go to charity and all the goodness in your glass. Don’t forget to tip your bartender!

epi 159 :: Jon Grinspan :: Curator ::  Political History National Museum of American History

 At the intersection of society, politics and booze is where you find Jon. As the Curator of Political History at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and author of “The Age of Acrimony: How Americans Fought to Fix Their Democracy 1865 – 1915” and “The Virgin Vote: How Young Americans Made Democracy Social, Politics Personal, and Voting Popular in the Nineteenth Century,” he is the ideal Designated Drinker.

On this epi, Jon sheds light on how using booze to sway an election is by no means a new tactic. Whether it be straight-out bribing people for votes (booze = vote) or by suppressing votes (too much booze = who cares about voting), booze has definitely played an important role in our democracy.  So, who better to tip back a few in honor of President’s Day than with a historian whose cup runneth over with knowledge about our voting past and the great lengths people have gone in order to win?
